Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

This is an open continuous announcement and will close no later than September 30, 2026. Initial cutoff for referral of eligible applications is August 18, 2026. About the role

The U.S. Attorney's Office is accepting applications for the position of an Assistant United States Attorney to serve in the Civil Division. The attorney must be devoted to justice, excellence, fairness, and representing the public. The attorney will represent the United States and its agencies and employees in court, handling civil cases across a broad range of practice areas, including civil investigations of fraud, harm to government property, civil rights violations, and other federal law violations designed to protect the public. Responsibilities

• Handle all aspects of civil cases, including writing and speaking clearly and persuasively.
• Analyze complex legal and factual issues.
• Exhibit good organizational skills and exercise sound judgment.
• Work independently and collaboratively with attorneys and staff of diverse backgrounds.
• Negotiate effectively with opposing counsel.
• Handle matters with integrity on behalf of the people of the United States.
• Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.
• Occasional travel within and outside the District will be required.

Requirements

• United States citizenship is required.
• J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction).
• At least 1 year of post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
• Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof (see 28 U.S.C. 545).
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify registration with the Selective Service System or be exempt (see www.sss.gov).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year of post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Highly desired are excellent writing, speaking, and analytical skills; interest in and dedication to public service; interest in handling a wide variety of challenging cases on behalf of the United States; and the ability to work well both independently and on teams.

Pay

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $85,573 to $197,100, which includes 30.52% locality pay.
