About the role
The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa seeks two experienced attorneys to serve as Assistant U.S. Attorneys in our Civil Division. These positions are located in Des Moines, Iowa.
Responsibilities
- Handle a broad range of complex cases on behalf of the United States, including defense of claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act, employment discrimination statutes, and commercial litigation.
- Engage in affirmative litigation involving fraud, debt collection, real estate foreclosures, bankruptcy, and appeals of administrative determinations involving federal agencies.
- Participate in civil litigation, including trial and appellate work.
- Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to achieve departmental goals.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to address civil legal issues.
Requirements
- Must possess a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction).
- At least one-year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience is required, with at least three years of post-J.D. litigation experience preferred.
- Superior oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, and the ability to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment.
- A demonstrated record of integrity.
- Successful evaluation for the past year for applicants who are attorneys or government attorneys.
- Not have received any disciplinary action within the past three years from the date of the application.
- Ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies.
- Ability to lead, motivate, mentor, and evaluate other highly qualified attorneys.
Qualifications

Pay
- Salary range: $77,371 to $197,100, including locality pay.
