About the role

As an Assistant Trainmaster, you’ll work side-by-side with the Trainmaster to ensure safe, smooth, and on-time operations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys problem-solving, and values strong team relationships. You’ll support train crews, coordinate railcar movements, and help exceed customer expectations—leading with purpose in a company that values focus, respect, and excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Trainmaster to promote a safe work environment
  • Understand customer and interchange partner requirements and assist in implementing processes to meet or exceed expectations
  • Assist in railcar switching to maintain operations
  • Support the Trainmaster in training and developing employees
  • Supervise crews and manage payroll within budget
  • Represent the railroad at customer meetings and coordinate with partnering railroads to meet customer needs
  • Assist in conducting incident investigations, including proper notification and documentation
  • Develop a management style aligned with G&W’s core values to encourage results-oriented performance
  • Assist with other projects and perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

  • 5+ years of work experience in the railroad industry
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, applications, reporting, etc.)
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of high school diploma/GED and experience; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate

Working Conditions

  • Full-time (40+ hours weekly) with a varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment, including nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call
  • Must be available to respond outside of normal business hours on short notice for emergencies or operational needs
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • Walking long distances on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders/equipment while maintaining three points of contact
  • Able to lift up to 75 pounds from floor to waist and carry short distances
  • Able to squat, bend, and lift overhead
  • Good balance and coordination
  • Must meet vision requirements (including color)

Employment Requirements

  • Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical review
  • Federally mandated drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment screening
  • Background screening, including criminal and motor vehicle driving history
