Assistant Town Attorney
About the role
The Town of Front Royal seeks an Assistant Town Attorney to support the Town Council and other public bodies and departments. The position involves enforcing Town Code provisions, transactional work, and FOIA compliance. The successful candidate will assist the Town Attorney and must have strong interpersonal and written communication skills, knowledge of Virginia law, and experience in local government practice.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel to Town Council, department heads, and staff
- Draft or review contracts and other legal instruments
- Draft and/or review ordinances, resolutions, forms, policies, and procedures
- Interpret legal documents and statutes
- Handle conflicts of interest act (COIA) and freedom of information act (FOIA) issues
- Assist in civil, criminal, and traffic litigation
- Supervise a small group of employees in the Legal department
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Juris Doctorate
- Licensed Attorney by Virginia State Bar
Qualifications
- Knowledge of legal principles, precedents, and practices
- Knowledge of general statutory, administrative law, and State and Federal laws
- Knowledge of judicial and administrative procedures and rules of evidence
- Collaborative conflict resolution, negotiation, and meeting facilitation skills
- Effective leadership and management abilities
- Ability to analyze and interpret facts, evidence, and legal instruments
- Clear and logical communication skills
- Sound judgment
