Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education

About the role

Part‑time (50% FTE) Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education, appointment January 1 2027 through December 31 2027 (renewable based on performance, curricular need, and funding). The position is jointly housed in the Department of Art and Visual Culture (College of Design) and the School of Education (College of Health and Human Sciences) at Iowa State University. Art education at ISU prepares pre‑service teachers to teach visual art across K–12 settings through art‑centered, interdisciplinary, and community‑engaged approaches. The successful candidate will teach two undergraduate courses each semester (primarily ARTED 2090 Methods of Teaching in and Through Art and ARTED 2110 Introduction to Art Education), prepare syllabi, materials, and assessments, hold office hours, and participate in program and faculty meetings. Pedagogically adaptive and innovative teaching is expected. The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to curriculum planning for the art endorsement in the School of Education’s M.A.T. program and to help grow art education at ISU. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship; immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

• Teach two undergraduate courses each semester, primarily ARTED 2090 (Methods of Teaching in and Through Art) and ARTED 2110 (Introduction to Art Education).
• Introduce discipline‑specific and interdisciplinary methods that foster creativity, collaborative learning, aesthetic sensitivity, and appreciation of art across cultures.
• Prepare syllabi, course materials, and assessment tools; hold office hours; participate in relevant program and faculty meetings.
• Employ pedagogically adaptive and innovative approaches to teaching.
• Contribute to curriculum planning for the art endorsement and support the continued growth of art education at Iowa State.
