About the role

The Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco) is a community development organization dedicated to building sustainable, affordable homes and supporting thriving neighborhoods through various programs. WHEDco operates Urban Horizons Early Childhood Discovery Center, an Early Learn NYC and Head Start program for young children.

Responsibilities

  • Implement program goals, policies, and procedures while adhering to schedules and personnel practices.
  • Check in daily with the Education Director to review staffing and classroom needs and develop a plan for classroom support.
  • Provide classroom support across multiple classrooms, as assigned, to maintain required adult-to-child ratios and support program continuity.
  • Aid in supervising children by planning and executing age-appropriate education, social, and developmental programs, creating and supervising a conducive learning environment, and collaborating with the Lead Teacher on curriculum planning for groups and individual children.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of children's progress.
  • Maintain classrooms, equipment, and materials in good condition and encourage their constructive use.
  • Report damaged or hazardous equipment to the Education Director.
  • Participate in team conferences, staff meetings, in-service trainings, and educational courses.
  • Participate in parent meetings, conferences, and home visits, as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Support positive communication and collaborative relationships with children, families, and Center staff.
  • Flexibly transition between classrooms based on staffing and operational needs and, when necessary, provide temporary classroom coverage for one or more days.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Education Director and/or Center Director.

Qualifications

  • Minimum requirements for the New York City Department of Health: Bureau of Day Care, Section 47.13 Staff.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent, or 60 college credits, and/or Child Development Associate Credential approved by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
  • Proven ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English. Strong skill in a second language most common amongst participants is also preferred.
  • General knowledge of early childhood development.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly across multiple classrooms and adapt to changing program needs.
  • Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations and screening procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 30–50 pounds and conduct home visits using public transportation, including climbing stairs.

Benefits

After 60 days of employment, Center Staff working 15 hours or more per week are represented by Local 95, DC 37, AFSCME, and are covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
