Assistant Teacher

JCEO is a private, not-for-profit Community Action Agency serving Clinton and Franklin Counties in New York State since 1966, dedicated to enhancing the lives of the working poor, elderly, sick, and disadvantaged through comprehensive services. This full-time, non-exempt Assistant Teacher position is based on-site at 127 Beekman Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901, with an hourly rate of $17.30. The role performs a variety of instructional tasks to assist in daily Head Start Center operations, ensuring children are never left unsupervised.

Responsibilities

• Discusses daily center routine with the Teacher to implement program activities consistent with Program Performance Standards as assigned.
• Assists the Teacher with curriculum planning and evaluation.
• Prepares and cleans up classroom materials as directed by the Teacher.
• Supervises center activities in cooperation with the Teacher.
• Assists students, individually or in groups, to reinforce developmentally appropriate learning concepts as approved by the Teacher.
• Accompanies Teacher on home visits when necessary.
• Keeps accurate and confidential records as required.
• Assists the Teacher with CAPTAIN input regarding child and family contacts, referrals, and goal progress at least weekly.
• Assists the Teacher in ensuring appropriate documentation for Non Federal Share for all volunteers and donations to the classroom.
• Attends all meetings as assigned by the Teacher.
• Assumes the role of Teacher in the event the Teacher is absent.
• Maintains sound developmentally appropriate practices with all children in the Center.
• Attends all required training.
• Ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations.
• Performs all duties in a manner consistent with the mission and goals of JCEO.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, or willingness to enroll in a CDA program completed within 2 years; or an Associate's or Bachelor's degree (in any area) or enrollment in a program leading to such a degree.
• One year of experience working with preschool children.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk and hear.
• Frequently required to sit.
• Occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell.
• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Frequently required to work in close proximity to moving vehicles.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, cleaning and sanitizing chemicals, and outside weather conditions.
• Noise level is usually loud.
