Position Overview

The Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement and Academic Programming serves on the Superintendent's Cabinet and provides strategic leadership for the district. The Assistant Superintendent provides leadership and oversight for all instructional practices, including curriculum and instruction, data and assessment practices, professional learning, instructional coaching, and intervention and enrichment systems. As an integral member of the Superintendent's Cabinet, the Assistant Superintendent collaborates across all departments and employee groups to promote continuous improvement and ensure high-quality educational opportunities for all students. The Assistant Superintendent plans and provides professional development for administrators and staff on curriculum, instruction, assessment, intervention, best practices, the Science of Reading, and other instructional initiatives as needed. The leader in this position supports district administrators and staff in using data to inform decision-making, drive continuous improvement, and improve student outcomes. This position also requires ongoing collaboration with the Board of Education and families.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of equitable, high-quality PreK-12 curriculum, instruction, assessment, and academic programming.
  • Drive districtwide student achievement through strategic use of data, accountability measures, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Provide instructional leadership by overseeing professional learning, curriculum development, and support for school and district administrators.
  • Develop and manage academic programs, grants, and departmental budgets while ensuring alignment with district priorities and state requirements.
  • Collaborate with district leadership, the Board of Education, families, and community partners to advance academic excellence and innovative educational opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) Intermediate Administrator and Supervisor Certificate (092)
  • At least five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience; currently holds valid teaching certificate.
  • At least five (5) years of successful building-level and/or central office leadership experience
  • Strong and proven experiences in curriculum and instruction, including cultural competencies, PreK-12; in data-driven decision making, in developing and delivering high-quality professional development offerings for administrators, teachers, support staff, and for families; and in direct coaching and supervision experiences of administrators, teachers and support staff
  • Successful grant writing and management experiences
  • Successful experiences in co-developing successful academic program with special education and multi-lingual learner Department Leaders and staff
  • Strong understanding of best practices and research-based strategies in instructional leadership
  • Knowledge of the uses of instructional technology, which supports enhanced teaching and learning
  • Experience in supervising compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and regulations and policies
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Serves as an exemplary model of professionalism, communication, integrity, and dedication to the profession.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish highly desirable
  • Advanced doctoral degree in the field of education
  • Demonstrated experience in successful leadership of a high-needs, turn-a-round district initiatives
  • Understands potential educational impact of poverty and trauma-informed and restorative practices
  • Experience in innovation and designing and leading new program development for students.
