Responsibilities
- Load and handle horses in the starting gate during the races.
- Work in the mornings schooling unruly horses.
- Teach young horses the ways of the starting gate.
- Aid the state veterinarian with injured horses.
- Aid in track maintenance by loading injured horses on the horse ambulance.
- Aid the EMT crew with injured riders.
- Be available to assist with unruly or injured horses in the paddock.
- Maintain and set the gate.
Requirements
- Prior horse experience is required.
- Able to handle the heavy physical aspects of the position.
- Must be able to count and do basic addition and subtraction.
Qualifications
- Must be eligible to hold a West Virginia Racing Commission license.
Physical Demands
- Regularly stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
- Frequently sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to move quickly and be on their feet during shifts.
Work Environment
- Must be able to work as a team player.
- Required to work in year-round weather conditions.
- Uniforms are provided.
- Must be 21 years of age.
