Supports the Head Coach in administering a competitive NCAA Division III intercollegiate softball program, focusing on student-athlete development through mentorship, skill instruction, recruitment, and fiscal management while adhering to NCAA, NESCAC, and college policies.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Head Coach in all aspects of running a highly competitive Division III athletics program.
  • Provides leadership, instruction, and support in the personal and athletic development of student-athletes, including academic, disciplinary, and personal advising.
  • Delivers individual and group instruction on competition strategy, conditioning, and technical skills.
  • Develops and implements motivational strategies to maximize individual and team performance.
  • Collaborates with strength and conditioning and sports medicine staff to ensure student-athletes are physically prepared for competition.
  • Works with the head coach and equipment manager to monitor and maintain athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies for safety and functionality.
  • Connects students to campus support services (e.g., Accessible Education, Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Services, Sports Medicine) and coordinates services as needed.
  • Assists in recruiting student-athletes, serving as the first point of contact for potential students and families, evaluating talent, and ensuring compliance with NESCAC and NCAA guidelines.
  • Represents Bates at high school visits, college fairs, and other recruiting events, emphasizing equity and inclusion.
  • Arranges team travel and lodging, adhering to budget requirements and college policies for expense reconciliation.
  • Assists with film review and game strategy.
  • Maintains an active social media presence for the team, posting regularly (every 1-3 days).
  • Tracks team expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility and adheres to financial protocols.
  • Assists with approved fundraising activities in coordination with the Director of Athletics and College Advancement.
  • Compiles data and reports for the head coach or senior administrators, synthesizing information and providing recommendations.
  • Enforces all policies and procedures of the Department of Athletics, the College, NESCAC, and the NCAA.
  • Completes required training and certifications and participates in professional development opportunities.
  • Performs secondary duties (20% of the role) to support department operations, such as game management, facility operations, compliance, marketing, and student programming.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Current CPR & First Aid certification.
  • Experience playing or coaching softball, preferably at the college level.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising young adults and managing programs.
  • Experience as an offensively minded coach with a focus on developing student-athletes physically and mentally.
  • General knowledge of data-driven technology (e.g., Rapsodo, Hit Trax, Trackman).
  • Strong teaching ability and technical knowledge of the sport.
  • Excellent judgment and ethical decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop collegial relationships; flexibility, collaboration, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to establish rapport with students and families while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Proficiency in basic data management systems, game film editing programs, and computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to learn additional applications as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally, and to work weekends, evenings, and non-traditional schedules.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $45,350 to $47,122.50. Placement within the range depends on experience and other factors.
