Located in the state capital, the University of Illinois Springfield is one of three members of the University of Illinois system. The University serves more than 4,000 students in 44 graduate and 56 undergraduate programs.

About the role

The Assistant Softball Coach assists in the development, management, implementation, and advancement of a competitive intercollegiate softball program within the philosophy, objectives, policies, and guidelines of NCAA Division II, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), and the Department of Athletics at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). This position reports to the Head Softball Coach.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and instruct advanced-level skills, techniques, and game strategies inherent in the highest level of competitive play; develop UIS softball student-athletes to achieve successful competitive results.
  • Assist in recruiting highly successful softball student-athletes who are both physically and academically talented, represent UIS and the Department of Athletics with good character, and strive to graduate from UIS.
  • Assist in preparation for practices, competitions, and team travel.
  • Support fundraising, marketing, promotion, and alumni and community engagement for UIS softball and the Department of Athletics.
  • Collaborate with athletic training staff, academic support personnel, strength and conditioning, compliance staff, and other campus personnel to enhance and support the UIS softball student-athlete experience.
  • Ensure compliance with all NCAA Division II and Great Lakes Valley Conference rules, including submission of compliance forms, adherence to policies and procedures, and attendance at mandatory NCAA rules education sessions.
  • Assist with prospect camps and clinics to increase local and regional exposure and recruitment for UIS softball.
  • Attend GLVC, UIS, and Department of Athletics meetings as scheduled; hold office hours in the Recreation and Athletic Center; complete required NCAA and UIS training.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the department’s strategic goals and ongoing initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Demonstrated experience in playing, coaching, or individual skill instruction of softball or a similar sport.

Pay

Minimum starting salary of $1,000 per month for 10 months, plus the potential of a tuition waiver and an on-campus apartment.

This position is covered by the State University Retirement System instead of Social Security. Medicare taxes will still apply, and retirement benefits may affect future Social Security benefits.
