Assistant Softball Coach

About the Role

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize individual and team success. The coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. The role includes extended hours, risk of injury, and due process considerations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach in organizing and supervising the softball program.
  • Implement athletic policies approved by the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation's School Board.
  • Adhere to and interpret system, state (IHSAA), and league (Conference) regulations.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for staff to teach.
  • Design and conduct conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Assist in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and school employees for program needs.
  • Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and sites.
  • Serve as a mentor to athletes, promoting character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor student athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for participants during practices, games, and travel.
  • Communicate with athletic trainers regarding injuries and ensure proper procedures are followed.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Enforce discipline, delineate due process procedures, and contact parents when necessary.
  • Assist athletes with college or advanced educational opportunities.
  • Participate in budgeting, recommend equipment guidelines, and operate within budget appropriations.
  • Account for all equipment, including issuing, storing, reconditioning, and inventory management.
  • Maintain cleanliness and security of facilities, equipment rooms, and locker rooms.
  • Organize preseason meetings with parents, coaches, players, and guests.
  • Promote the sport within and outside the school through recruiting and media engagement.
  • Maintain good public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.

Requirements

  • Previous successful coaching experience in softball or a major sport.
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of softball and a commitment to staying updated on new theories and procedures.
  • Completed Concussion Certification and National Federation of High School Sports Coaching Accreditations, compliant with IHSAA regulations.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties and analyze staff effectiveness at the end of the season.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist in scheduling, transportation, and event requirements.
  • Ensure proper preparation and adherence to facility schedules.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
  • Secure and maintain equipment, including issuing, storing, and inventory management.

Student Responsibilities

  • Mentor athletes to develop character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor athletes' academic performance and conduct.
  • Provide guidance and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
  • Enforce training rules and sport-specific regulations.
  • Manage discipline, due process, and parent communication when necessary.

Finance and Equipment

  • Participate in budgeting and recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Operate within budget appropriations and account for all equipment.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, reconditioning, and inventory of equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and security of equipment and facilities.

Public Relations

  • Organize and lead preseason meetings with parents, coaches, players, and guests.
  • Promote the sport within the school and externally through media and community engagement.
  • Maintain positive relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, and fans.
  • Provide information to news media regarding schedules, tournaments, and results.

Pay

Stipend based on experience.

Schedule

Less than 12-month position.
