Assistant Services Manager
About the role
The Assistant Services Manager (ASM) leads through Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values to develop a high-performing team that consistently delivers sales growth in hair and skin services. The ASM supports the Experience Manager (EM) in leading a team of stylists and estheticians, overseeing all aspects of the services business—including services and merchandise sales, events, guest satisfaction, and operational excellence—while also providing services to guests in the salon. This role drives business through performance, people, and process, requiring a passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, and the ability to lead and influence.
Responsibilities
- Perform salon services, including haircutting, haircolor, styling, texture treatments, makeup applications, skincare analysis, brow services, and product demonstrations.
- Achieve individual productivity goals weekly.
- Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed store goals for service and merchandise sales, guest loyalty, payroll, omni-channel sales, and retail shrink.
- Drive company profitability through operational excellence, top-line sales growth, and expense control.
- Support the planning and execution of services events that deliver an unrivaled guest experience and drive sales.
- Review, analyze, and react to financial and operational reporting, including services visits and audit results.
- Address underperforming metrics and develop strategies to improve service sales using company tools and resources.
- Stay informed about industry trends, products, and services, and educate guests on their benefits.
- Maintain prompt, regular attendance and hold services associates accountable to the attendance policy.
- Support the attraction, hiring, and retention of a diverse team of top talent, leveraging social media and addressing staffing needs.
- Build a highly engaged team through collaboration, communication, coaching, and prioritization of work.
- Train, coach, and develop services professionals using company programs and resources.
- Create an inclusive environment that encourages associate growth and engagement, ensuring attendance at required training.
- Support associate professional development, including individualized feedback, coaching, succession planning, and development plans.
- Establish professional relationships with peers and brand partners to collaboratively deliver on sales and service goals.
- Ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards, including dress code and workplace safety.
- Manage salon supply inventory and ordering process within budget.
- Use the company’s task management tool to prioritize and execute store workload, including product resets, pricing updates, and inventory tasks.
- Protect company assets and minimize loss by adhering to operational procedures and loss prevention standards.
- Support the adoption of company initiatives and technology, communicating expectations and ensuring execution.
- Assist the Experience Manager and General Manager in scheduling service associates to optimize productivity and traffic patterns.
Requirements
- Cosmetology school graduate.
- Cosmetology license and/or cosmetology management license where required by state law.
- 2–3+ years of relevant, fast-paced salon management or other relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state board of cosmetology regulations and hiring requirements.
- Experience with financial management, including driving top-line sales, interpreting reporting data, managing payroll budgets, and controlling expenses.
- Experience with leadership management, including attracting, developing, and motivating top talent, adapting to change, and fostering collaboration.
Skills
- Proficiency in latest salon techniques for haircutting, haircolor, styling, texture treatments, extensions, makeup, brow services, and ear piercing (where applicable).
- Basic proficiency with technology (e.g., Point of Sale systems, Microsoft Office, Apple devices).
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to react under pressure, use good judgment in ambiguous situations, and adapt to changing priorities.
Special Position Requirements
- Work a flexible, full-time schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Attend corporate business meetings and conferences.
Working Conditions
- Continuous mobility throughout the store during shift.
- Frequent standing, bending, reaching, and twisting.
- Continuous lifting and/or moving up to 10 lbs.

Pay
The pay range for this position is the higher of $15.92 - $23.65 per hour or services pay for the workweek pursuant to the Company’s Services Compensation Plan. Eligible associates may earn additional compensation through the Company’s bonus plan, overtime pay (as required by law), and tips from service guests. Exact pay will be based on factors including education, qualifications, certifications, experience, level, shift, geographic location, and business needs.
