About the Role

Assists the teacher or principal by helping students achieve the standards and objectives of excellence as set by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Works cooperatively with the principal and teacher to provide a classroom environment where students can take full advantage of instructional programs and available resource materials.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the instruction of individual students or groups of students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
  • Plans and works with teachers to devise special strategies for reinforcing skills and concepts based on individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Operates and cares for equipment and materials for instructional purposes within assigned classroom(s).
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in various settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Interacts positively with students, parents, and colleagues and facilitates positive interactions among students.
  • Collaborates and shares ideas and strategies with other team members.
  • Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Participates in in-service training programs for professional growth.
  • Assists with school routines and transitions.
  • Assists in checking materials, supervising, and assessing students as directed by the teacher.
  • Assists with student attendance procedures, record keeping, collecting money, ordering materials, and other assigned tasks.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education equivalent to 48 credit hours, or ability to pass a formal assessment (Workkey and 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program, or completion of the NC ATA Professional Development.

Qualifications

Desirable: Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education. More than two years of classroom experience.

  • Knowledge of specific knowledge-based competencies required to perform the functions of the position.
  • Ability to read various manuals and write documents to present information to parents.
  • Ability to understand complex, multi-stepped written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to be flexible and work independently under general supervision.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with staff, volunteers, parents, and students.
  • Ability to provide a broad range of instructional assistance to teachers and others.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions.
  • Ability to operate and maneuver standard office equipment and specialized classroom equipment.
  • Ability to work with student data while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Skill in problem-solving to identify issues and create action plans.
  • Must maintain a high level of ethical behavior.
