About the role

The Assistant Restaurant Manager supports the overall operations of the Shores Hotel restaurant and Club Dining outlets. This role coordinates and oversees daily food service activities, working both independently and through supervisory oversight of staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assures that floor is properly staffed and maintained throughout the shift.
  • In conjunction with the manager, assigns work to employees and monitors performance to ensure that quality service standards are maintained.
  • Fills in as needed by business demand on the dining floor and in the bar.
  • Inspects food and food preparation to maintain quality standards and sanitation regulations. Delegates responsibility with follow-up to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness.
  • Investigates and resolves food quality and service complaints.
  • Reviews financial transactions and monitors budget to ensure efficient operation, and to ensure expenditures stay within budget limitations.
  • Evaluates and appraises performance of subordinate employees. Regularly provides employees with positive and/or negative feedback regarding performance. Promptly conducts formal periodically scheduled appraisals (i.e. 90 day and annual reviews).
  • Based on performance, appropriately rewards, coaches, counsels, and disciplines employees. Adheres to applicable company policies and procedures and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Properly documents performance related issues (i.e. Guest comments, verbal or written warnings, awards and achievements).
  • Helps plan and organize daily work activities for employees and helps set weekly and/or monthly goals for the Restaurant.
  • In the absence of the Manager, assumes the responsibilities of managing the total operation of the restaurant, including all decisions for the guests’ best interest during all hours of operation.
  • Assists in supervision of employees in the Service Staff. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit in the absence of the restaurant manager. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current San Diego County Food Handlers Card and Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in English from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and spreadsheets such as Lotus 1-2-3 (or Excel).

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to walk and taste or smell.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions

  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, burns from hot equipment, and lacerations from sharp objects.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The pace is generally moderate and may be quite fast.
  • Daily interaction with guests, kitchen and dining service personnel, Human Resources, Purchasing, other department managers, and Accounting.
  • Occasional interaction with other department supervisors and E.O.C. members.

Schedule

  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
  • This company operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. At times it will be necessary to move from your accustomed schedule as task assignments demand.
  • Business needs determine the number of hours worked.
