The Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARD) supports the operations of a residential quad housing approximately 1,200 residents, fostering an inviting, intellectual, and inclusive community. This live-in position requires residence in an on-campus apartment provided by the Department of Residential Life and follows a ten-month college-year schedule based on the academic calendar.
Responsibilities
- Support front-end operations of the Quad Information Center within the residential community.
- Serve on-call and on-duty weekly to respond to emergencies, mental health incidents, and enforce University policies.
- Live in the assigned on-campus apartment and respond to all emergencies as a live-in professional staff member.
- Support staff development, programming, and administrative functions for the quad or residential community.
- Adjudicate student conduct violations of the Community Rights and Responsibilities.
- Support key departmental functions including opening/closing of residence halls, staff hiring and training, housing selection, and attending designated quad or departmental events.
- Lead and manage direct reports (work-study and student assistant staff), providing guidance, support, and performance feedback to align with University goals.
- Complete performance management feedback and goals in a timely manner, offering constructive feedback and developing improvement plans.
- Attend quad, residential community, department, divisional, and/or university meetings, events, and trainings.
- Represent Residential Life at enrollment-focused events, which may occur on nights and weekends.
- Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Ability to live in the provided on-campus apartment for the duration of employment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community.
- Demonstrated ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging in the role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in college or university residential life.
Working Environment
The role operates in a dynamic, fast-paced environment blending office work, residence halls, and outdoor campus locations. Responsibilities include:
- Incident response for policy violations, mental health concerns, facilities emergencies, or other time-sensitive matters.
- Flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities, including peak periods during residence hall openings/closings, duty rotations, and emergency response.
- Regular evening and weekend work as part of the live-in professional role.
- Moderate physical demands, including standing/walking for events, moving between office spaces and residential areas, and occasional setup of events or moving student belongings.
- Mental demands requiring multitasking, problem-solving, strategic decision-making, and interpersonal interactions (e.g., training, supervision, conflict resolution, and policy enforcement).
Pay
Professional Rank and Salary: Residence Hall Intern, SL1, $38,088.
