Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I )

Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is accepting applications for an Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) in the Salina Regional Public Defender Office in Salina, Kansas. This entry-level position is for developing attorneys who will perform legal work under the mentorship of experienced attorneys and supervision of the Chief Public Defender or designated Deputy Defender.

The Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) represents adults charged with felonies who cannot afford an attorney. BIDS is transforming its public defense model to emphasize interdisciplinary, team-based collaborative defense that leverages community resources for holistic client representation. The organization seeks dynamic, client-centered advocates passionate about public defense and interested in contributing to systemic reform.

Responsibilities

• Represent indigent adults charged with criminal felonies in district court.
• Develop fundamental trial skills and manage all aspects of a caseload.
• Coordinate with supporting personnel to provide client-centered, holistic representation.
• Process, organize, and manage complex litigation.
• Handle emergency or crisis situations, frequent interruptions, and multiple inquiries.
• Interact respectfully with clients, witnesses, colleagues, and court personnel.
• Maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
• Occasional travel to courts, jails, and other work locations.

Requirements

• Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school; licensed attorney in good standing in Kansas (or ability to seek admission immediately upon hire).
• Candidates anticipating taking the 2025 Kansas bar exam will be considered.
• Valid driver’s license (required for travel to courts/jails not within walking distance).
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency with electronic devices, e-filing systems, and case management software.
• Strong time management, organizational skills, and ability to avoid unnecessary case delays.
• Commitment to client-centered practice and treating all individuals with dignity and respect.
• Academic curiosity about criminal law and procedure.

Pay

Compensation starts at $65,000.00 - $70,000.00, with potential variation based on experience or qualifications.
