Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is accepting applications for an Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) in the North Central Regional Public Defender Office in Junction City, Kansas. This entry-level position is for developing attorneys who will perform legal work under the mentorship of experienced attorneys and supervision of the Chief Public Defender or designated Deputy Defender.

About the Mission

The Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) represents adults charged with felonies who cannot afford an attorney. BIDS is transforming its public defense model to emphasize interdisciplinary, team-based, and collaborative defense systems that leverage community resources for holistic client representation. We seek dynamic, client-centered advocates passionate about public defense and interested in contributing to this systemic transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Represent indigent adults charged with criminal felonies in district court.
  • Develop fundamental trial skills and manage all aspects of a caseload.
  • Coordinate with supporting personnel to provide client-centered, holistic representation.
  • Process, organize, and manage complex litigation.
  • Handle emergency or crisis situations, frequent interruptions, and multiple inquiries.
  • Interact respectfully with clients, co-workers, and colleagues.
  • Maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information.
  • Occasional travel to courts, jails, and other work locations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school; licensed attorney in good standing in Kansas (or willingness to seek admission immediately upon hire).
  • Applications accepted from candidates anticipating the 2026 bar exam.
  • Valid driver’s license for travel to courts and jails not within walking distance.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic devices, e-filing systems, and case management systems.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and ability to avoid unnecessary case delays.
  • Academic curiosity about criminal law and procedure.
  • Commitment to treating every client, witness, and colleague with dignity and respect.
  • Demonstrated commitment to client-centered practice and uncompromising personal/professional ethics.

Pay

$65,000.00
