Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I)

Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is accepting applications for an Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) in the Twenty-Ninth Judicial District Public Defender Office in Kansas City, Kansas. This position is for entry-level and developing attorneys who will perform legal work under the mentorship of experienced attorneys and supervision of the Chief Public Defender or designated Deputy Defender.

About the Mission

The Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) represents adults charged with felonies who cannot afford an attorney. BIDS is transforming its public defense model to emphasize interdisciplinary, team-based, and collaborative defense systems that leverage community resources for holistic client representation. We seek dynamic, client-centered advocates passionate about public defense and interested in contributing to this systemic transformation.

Responsibilities

• Represent indigent adults charged with criminal felonies in district court.
• Develop fundamental trial skills and manage all aspects of a caseload.
• Provide client-centered, holistic representation in collaboration with supporting personnel.
• Process, organize, and manage complex litigation.
• Handle emergency or crisis situations, frequent interruptions, and multiple inquiries.
• Maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
• Occasional travel to courts, jails, and other work locations.

Requirements

• Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school and licensed attorney in good standing in Kansas (or willingness to seek admission immediately upon hire).
• Candidates anticipating taking the bar exam in 2026 may apply.
• Valid driver’s license (required where courts/jails are not within walking distance).
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency with electronic devices, e-filing systems, and case management software.
• Strong time management, organizational skills, and ability to avoid unnecessary case delays.
• Ability to interact respectfully with clients, colleagues, and witnesses.
• Commitment to client-centered practice, confidentiality, and professional ethics.
• Academic curiosity about criminal law and procedure.

Pay

Compensation starts at $62,500.00 and may vary based on experience or qualifications.
