Assistant Project Manager I
About the role
Entry-level construction management position. On project assignment, you’ll work with Project Managers, Directors of Construction, Project Directors, and Superintendents by completing assigned tasks as part of a project team. You’re expected to take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through to completion. The role includes participation in management training programs and training in company management tools, standards, policies, and procedures. Assistant Project Managers (APMs) are expected to spend most of their time on construction sites to learn and implement construction management methodologies, gain firsthand experience, and provide optimal support to projects and project teams.
Responsibilities
- Field Management, Safety, and Quality: Work with the superintendent on subcontractor coordination, self-perform scopes, safety and quality management, and job site reporting and controls. Understand and communicate Haskell safety policies to subcontractors. Implement requirements of the Quality Implementation Plan (QIP). Conduct regular site walks, observe and document construction activities (Safety, Plans/Specifications, Submittals, RFIs), and provide detailed reports to the PM and Superintendent. Verify proper materials and work in place.
- Document Control and Project Communications: Review and transmit submittals; maintain submittal control log; prepare and manage requests for information (RFIs) and maintain the RFI log. Manage drawing updates and preparation of meeting minutes. Oversee as-builts and redline drawings in the field.
- Scheduling: Work with the project team to update progress schedules, including short-term interval schedules. Assist in planning construction operations and sequences.
- Financial Management: Assist with project budgets, costs, invoicing, change orders, and cost reporting. Apply knowledge of Haskell’s standard project numbering, cost codes, and cost types to develop detailed budgets from project estimates.
- Procurement and Commitments: Identify and qualify subcontractors and vendors for assigned scopes of work. Prepare and transmit bid packages and invitations to bid. Receive and analyze bids. In conjunction with the project manager, negotiate, draft, and award subcontracts and purchase orders.
- Estimating: Prepare detailed estimates and cost codes for initial cost control reporting. Update labor cost reports and summary cost reports.
- Scope and Change Management: Identify and document changes in scope during construction. Understand prime contract and subcontract terms and conditions.
- Design Coordination: Participate in design review meetings and monitor design with attention to scope, cost changes, and constructability. Apply for, track, and expedite project permits. Coordinate with architects/engineers (AE) for design solutions and fixes for field-identified clashes.
- Client Relations: Interact with clients as directed by the project manager, including correspondence, periodic reports, change order requests, submittal of pay requisitions, and response to client inquiries and directives.
- Project Lifecycle: Assist in preparing project start-up and close-out requirements, including unit cost history, operations and maintenance manuals, punch list management, and agency inspections.
- Software Knowledge: Acquire certification and proficiency in Procore, Building Connected, scheduling software, drones, cameras, measuring equipment, weather metering tools, augmented reality apps, and other relevant technologies for project management, verification, and documentation.
- Travel as required.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a similar field is preferred.
- Knowledge of the construction industry, including methods, engineering, equipment, technology, and safety.
- Ability to monitor resources, including budgets, schedules, and materials, in an environment with multiple, competing demands.

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
- Ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds.
- Good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read application/form information.
- Frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
