Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) - Philosophy and Religious Studies

About the role

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Philosophy, with specialization in Social and Political Philosophy, beginning August 2027. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in Philosophy and the capstone course in the General Education program, research, and service to the university and community.

Responsibilities

• Teach a 4/4 (24 credits annually) course load with an emphasis on high-impact instructional practices, student success, research, and professional service.
• Teach World of Ideas, the capstone course in the General Education program; at least one course in the History of Philosophy (time period open); and other courses aligned with the candidate’s areas of specialization and competence.
• Contribute to the Liberal Studies program administered by the department and help advise Liberal Studies majors.
• Maintain at least five weekly office hours for students during the academic year; office hours should be consistent and accessible.
• Use Navigate for all advising/mentoring notes and maintain professional and timely responsiveness to inquiries via Navigate, Canvas, email, and telephone, generally within 24–48 business hours while on contract.
• Submit course syllabi punctually at the start of each term, ensuring they meet all University and system-wide requirements.
• Contribute to curriculum development and select and develop instructional materials that are Title II (ADA) compliant.
• Maintain an active scholarly agenda contributing to the field of Philosophy, disseminate research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or professional exhibitions per department and college standards.
• Participate in departmental, college, and university-level meetings and committee work; engage in professional and public service; contribute to program assessment and development; and participate in at least one graduation ceremony each academic year.

Requirements

• PhD in Philosophy by the time of appointment.
• Area of Specialization: Social and Political Philosophy.
• ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2027; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2027 in advance of their first scheduled review.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching.
• Experience with Canvas.
• Record of scholarly achievement.
• Area of Competence: Open; preference for candidates who can contribute to interdisciplinary programs in Women’s and Gender Studies and/or Race and Ethnic Studies.

Compensation

Well-qualified candidates can expect a minimum starting annual salary of $60,000, commensurate with the candidate’s education, related experience, and qualifications. UW System employees receive an excellent benefit package.
