Assistant Professor - Sedimentology and Stratigraphy

About the role

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy. The position focuses on the dynamics of ancient and/or modern coastal, estuarine, and/or marine systems, employing field observations, laboratory analyses, geospatial methods, geochronology, paleontology/ichnology, geochemical proxies, subsurface imaging, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, numerical modeling, or integrative approaches.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain active collaborations within and outside the university, aligning with existing UH research strengths.
• Establish externally funded, internationally recognized research programs in coastal system dynamics.
• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in sedimentology, stratigraphy, and related subjects.
• Integrate research activities into experiential education opportunities for students.
• Contribute to departmental service and university initiatives as required.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a closely related field (must be earned by the time of appointment).
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research using field, laboratory, geospatial, geochronological, paleontological, geochemical, subsurface imaging, and/or numerical modeling techniques.
• Evidence of potential to secure external research funding and to publish in peer‑reviewed venues.
• Commitment to high‑quality teaching and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students.
• Eligibility to reside in Texas for the duration of the appointment.
• Willingness to provide official transcripts upon selection.
• Ability to pass a criminal history check; research in critical infrastructure areas may be subject to additional security review.
