Assistant Professor of Statistics and Data Science

St. Olaf College’s Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Statistics and Data Science, starting August 2027.

About the role

The successful candidate will teach five courses per year across the curriculum—from introductory to upper-level courses in their specialty—advise students, supervise undergraduate research, and contribute to departmental and college-wide service. A central expectation is fostering an inclusive, community-oriented learning environment within MSCS and the College.

Responsibilities

• Teach five courses annually at all curricular levels
• Develop and deliver upper-level courses in Statistics and Data Science
• Mentor undergraduate research projects
• Advise students and participate in departmental and college service
• Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, research, and service

Qualifications

• PhD (or near completion) in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or a closely related field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology) with a strong Statistics/Data Science focus
• Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy and building diverse learning communities
• Potential to engage undergraduates in research

Preferred expertise

• Specialization in Data Science, particularly candidates who can expand the department’s 300-level offerings
