About the Role

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CSUN is seeking up to two tenure-track faculty members in Organic Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will teach introductory and general chemistry at the undergraduate level, and organic chemistry and special topics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online.

The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in organic chemistry and special topics
  • Teach introductory and general chemistry at the undergraduate level
  • Maintain weekly office hours
  • Attend faculty meetings
  • Participate in assessment of student learning
  • Serve the department, college, and university
  • Conduct research in forefront organic chemistry
  • Develop and implement a robust plan of independent research, including strategies for publishing in top-tier journals, recruiting students, and obtaining extramural funding
  • Mentor diverse undergraduate and graduate students

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemistry from an accredited institution, with thesis research in organic chemistry
  • Clear potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate/graduate courses in person
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, mentoring diverse undergraduate/graduate students
  • Productive research experience in forefront organic chemistry
  • Well thought-out, robust plan of independent research activity feasible for success at CSUN

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral research or industrial research experience
  • Record of recent primary research publications in mainstream, peer-reviewed journals
  • Publication rate as first or corresponding author in mainstream, peer-reviewed journals commensurate with experience
  • Contributions to grant proposal writing
  • Evidence of effective engagement, or potential to engage, with a diverse student body
  • Experience using, or potential to use, culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students
  • Experience or potential for creating a student-centered learning environment
  • Research/lab experience that includes working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $83,349 - $92,610 (dependent upon qualifications).

Schedule

Effective date of appointment: August 19, 2027 (subject to budgetary approval).
