ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of MUSICOLOGY/ETHNOMUSICOLOGY / UMKC CONSERVATORY / Music Division

About the Position

The University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory seeks a qualified tenure-track Assistant Professor in Musicology, with an open call for specialization. The position is intended to enhance existing degree programs rather than establish a new program. It will expand students' understanding of the underlying basics and history of music as an art form or career choice and the Conservatory's established undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

At the UMKC Conservatory, we take pride in fostering collaboration across the divisions of music, dance, and theatre, and in advancing the integration of art forms through research and creative scholarly work. Our integrated arts approach intentionally weaves together multiple disciplines to deepen learning, expand artistic practice, and enrich audience experiences.

Responsibilities

• Teach graduate period and genre courses
• Teach undergraduate music history classes
• Teach general education classes with a music focus
• Teach graduate research & bibliography
• Teach graduate seminars in areas of specialized interest
• Advise Master's theses and DMA documents
• Build and sustain a national profile of research and publication that reflects the career of a consistently productive scholar
• Serve on appropriate student and faculty committees and maintain active participation in other Conservatory activities
• Contribute to all facets of the Division of Music and the UMKC Conservatory, including academic, performance, and service components characteristic of a Conservatory within a university
• Support and mentor a multifarious student body
• Make contributions that enrich the cultural environment and the quality of life in the greater Kansas City metropolitan community

Qualifications

• Evidence of emerging or established productivity as a scholar at the national level, with research areas that complement the existing faculty
• Evidence of a successful and innovative approach to music history pedagogy as applied to a university setting
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with both graduate and undergraduate students and to support students of varied identities and experiences
• Ph.D. in Musicology, Music History, or a comparative field (ABD considered, as long as degree is completed by start of appointment)
