Assistant Professor of English, Creative Writing (Fiction)

Marist University’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in Creative Writing (Fiction) beginning Fall 2027.

About the Role

A willingness to work with undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors from across campus is central to this position. We encourage applications from broadly trained candidates who can teach introductory writing courses such as Writing for College and Intro to Creative Writing, as well as advanced undergraduate courses that complement and expand our existing offerings. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring secondary teaching specializations such as Short Story, Memoir, Multi-Cultural Writing, or Creative Non-Fiction. Publishing industry experience as an editor or writer is preferred.

This position requires the ability and willingness to teach classes broadly across the discipline, mentor student projects and organizations, and collaborate with campus partners.

Responsibilities

• Teach 3–4 courses per semester; faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship may be eligible for a 3–3 teaching load.
• Participate regularly in service activities for students, the university, and the community.

Requirements

• MFA or PhD in Creative Writing or English in hand before the start date of the appointment.
• Evidence of continued creative publications.
• Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level.

Pay

$75,000 - $80,000

Schedule

• 9 months per year.
• Work schedule varies as required for teaching, office hours, departmental/school activities, and other activities as needed.
• Flexible work schedule; course schedule varies each semester.

About the Department

The English Department includes 18 faculty members and offers a BA in English with concentrations in Writing, Literature, and Theatre, and minors in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and Theatre. The department contributes substantially to the First Year Seminar program, as well as interdisciplinary programs including Africana Studies, American Studies, Global Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Asian Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The English Department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which includes departments in Political Science, History, World Languages & Cultures, and Philosophy & Religious Studies.
