Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and over fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, the college served approximately 24,000 students, with more than one-third born outside the United States from 136 countries and speaking 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students, 89 percent are ethnic minorities, 58 percent are women, and 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Most graduates transfer to four-year colleges, typically within CUNY, while others enter the workforce through career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020).

About the role

The Department of Education and Language Acquisition at LaGuardia Community College invites applicants for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Academic ESL, beginning in Spring 2027. Each position requires a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring community college students, collaborating with colleagues on Academic ESL Program design, as well as conducting research and publishing within the general field of TESOL/Second Language Acquisition.

  • Teach a range of levels of ESL courses
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in student assessment issues
  • Teach in different modalities, including using online course platforms
  • Engage in departmental and college-level committee work, including curriculum design, assessment review, professional development, and other administrative functions

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent
  • Ability to teach successfully
  • Demonstrated scholarship or achievement
  • Ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution

Preferred:

  • Earned doctorate in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a closely related field
  • Ability to address the academic and social needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students in urban settings
  • Documented successful experience teaching academic ESL courses at the undergraduate level
  • Ability to consider the impact of educational technology and its pedagogical use in language teaching and learning
