About the role
The Linguistics Program in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina (USC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Computational Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 16, 2026. This interdisciplinary joint hire (with the home department to be determined based on the candidate’s specialization) is part of a university-wide cluster hire in Data Sciences, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cybersecurity. The role aims to support cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI and Linguistics.
The successful candidate must maintain an active research program, demonstrate potential for securing extramural funding, and exhibit excellence in teaching and mentorship. The candidate will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization and Linguistics generally, with a typical teaching load of two courses per semester. They will also mentor graduate students in linguistics and participate in service to the broader USC community.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an active program of research in Computational Linguistics and AI.
- Demonstrate potential for securing extramural funding.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialization and Linguistics generally (typical load: two courses per semester).
- Mentor graduate students in linguistics.
- Participate in service to the USC community.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely linked discipline with linguistics training by August 15, 2026.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research agenda in Linguistics employing computational methods, including or leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Specialization in natural language processing (NLP) and/or machine learning.
- Investigation of other aspects of AI and language science.
