Assistant Professor, Latinx Studies and Creative Writing

Montclair State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution located 14 miles outside of New York City, seeks a joint tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latinx Studies and Creative Writing, beginning August 2027. This position is a collaboration between the Department of English and the Department of Global Cultural Studies.

About the Role

The successful candidate will teach creative writing workshops, courses in the Latin American and Latino Studies program, and English courses. Expertise should be informed by immigration from the Caribbean and/or Latin America, addressing themes such as bilingualism, borders, and social justice. The candidate must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in both English and Spanish, along with a robust record or exceptional promise in publishing academic articles, poetry, fiction, or other genres in Spanish. Collaboration with other departments on cross-listed courses and interdisciplinary initiatives may also be required.

Responsibilities

• Teach 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) per semester, with potential for reassigned time (course release) for additional responsibilities such as mentoring doctoral faculty or administering programs.
• Center student success through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments.
• Engage in classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising, and development and updating of courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.
• Maintain a productive scholarly or artistic agenda, sharing research results in significant national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues following rigorous review. The Faculty Scholarship Program (FSP) provides up to 6 TCH of reassigned time per academic year for research-active faculty.
• Perform service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities, including participation in shared governance and academic program vitality.

• Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree (PhD or MFA).
• Record of achievement and potential for future success in research, scholarship, or creative activity.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching all students.
• Commitment to service.
• Oral and written proficiency in both English and Spanish.
• Preferred: Significant record of scholarly/creative work.

About the Departments

The Department of English comprises over 20 full-time faculty, 300+ undergraduate majors, and approximately 30 M.A. students. It offers a diverse literary studies curriculum complemented by robust programs in creative writing, film studies, and teacher education.

The Department of Global Cultural Studies includes more than 25 full-time faculty, nearly 200 undergraduate majors, and approximately 30 M.A. students (Spanish and French). It focuses on global languages, literature, translation, cultural expression, religion, and Indigenous and Latino experiences, fostering linguistic and cultural literacy through an interdisciplinary approach.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is Montclair State’s largest college, serving over 5,000 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. Pay

Annual salary range: $80,309.12–$100,398.29.
