About the Department

The Department of Biological Sciences at Bridgewater State University is a dynamic community with over 400 undergraduate majors and a growing master’s program. We aim to provide students with a broad background in the biological sciences while supporting subdisciplines of interest, including concentrations in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Biomedical Science and Pre-medicine, and Secondary Education. The department’s mission is to train students and support their placement into the workforce and advanced degree programs.

Students are the central focus of the department, working alongside faculty who are committed to teaching and research. The department fosters a strong sense of community through small class sizes, individualized research and career mentoring, and a well-supported undergraduate research program that funds student projects and travel to present research at local, national, or international conferences.

The candidate will join thirteen full-time tenure-track faculty and teach a diverse student population. In Fall 2025, 46% of declared majors were students of color, 48% were first-generation, 38% were low-income, and 20% were LGBTQIA+. The department and College of Science and Mathematics have an active Collective focused on Equity and Racial Justice, and participation in this work is encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Teach in-person courses for Biology majors and non-majors, including Genetics lecture and laboratory sections.
• Develop and teach upper-level biology elective courses in your area of expertise that complement existing departmental strengths (may be cross-listed with the graduate program).
• Mentor undergraduate students in research and contribute to the Master of Science program through teaching or research mentoring.
• Participate in departmental meetings, committee work, curriculum development, and student advising.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.

Requirements

• Earned Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a related field by September 1, 2027.
• College-level teaching experience of undergraduate students.
• Ability to teach Genetics lecture and laboratory sections.
• Strong commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and undergraduate research mentoring that enhances an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

• Post-doctoral research experience.
• Experience mentoring undergraduate research.
• A well-developed research plan incorporating undergraduate students into a research program.
• Research with a eukaryotic model organism that complements departmental offerings at a BSL-II level or lower.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge of, or openness to developing, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques to engage a diverse student population.
• Familiarity with, or openness to adopting, innovative technology to foster engaged learning.

Pay

A reasonable starting salary range for a new faculty member appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor is $75,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience.
