Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment, Palliative, Rehabilitation & Integrative Medicine

This is a faculty position responsible to the Chairman, Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine, Division of Cancer Medicine.

About the role

Provides clinical and research expertise in patient care in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine, and an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, observers, visitors, and students of cancer medicine.

Responsibilities

Clinical - 80%

• Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners.
• Develop and maintain a service for patients referred to the UT MD Anderson.
• Provide clinical staffing for the Department at a level commensurate with other clinicians of the same training and experience.
• Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within one working day.
• Complete patient documentation for medical records within timeframes provided by institutional policy, ensuring clear and concise charting and visual review of documents.
• Correspond as appropriate in writing or by telephone with referring physicians and other health care personnel regarding patient care and treatment.
• Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone or in writing to other physicians and health care personnel.
• Serve as a role model practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students rotating in the Department.
• Provide a balanced and integrated educational program for fellows, observers, visitors, medical residents, and students who rotate through the Department.
• Develop, implement, provide, and evaluate written learning materials for the specific graduate curriculum in cancer medicine after comprehensive review and analysis.
• Develop and implement specific continuing education programs pertaining to cancer rehabilitation medicine.
• Analyze education needs and develop continuing education programs using a dictating machine or computer keyboard.
• Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, interacting verbally with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.
• Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.

Administration - 5%

• Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site.
• Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary.
• Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.

Research - 10%

• Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.
• Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities aligned with the goals of the Department.
• Synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research.
• Instruct research support personnel in protocol implementation orally or in writing as needed.
• Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical or basic research.
• Complete grant application forms through oral dictation or use of a computer and keyboard, including budget development and analysis.

Education - 5%

• Represent the Department in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to cancer rehabilitation medicine, including travel outside the Houston area.
• Disseminate information obtained from external sites to department colleagues verbally or in writing.
• Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested, attending meetings and providing verbal feedback.
• Keep abreast of current approaches in patient management through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty.

Requirements

• Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission.
• Licensed to practice in Texas.
• Board Certified (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
• Degree and residency requirements as defined by the Texas Medical Board.
• Completed residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine.

Qualifications

Preferred:

• Physician who has completed post-graduate residency training and is board certified/eligible in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine.
