Purpose

The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Produce Department. This position assists with inventory management, merchandising, employee supervision, product quality, and customer service to ensure the department achieves sales, profitability, and operational goals. The Assistant Produce Manager helps maintain the highest standards of freshness, food safety, and department presentation while serving as the acting department leader in the absence of the Produce Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Development

    • Aid in leading, coaching, and developing Produce Department employees.
    • Support hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members.
    • Provide daily direction, feedback, and performance coaching to department associates.
    • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and customer service excellence.
    • Aid with department scheduling and labor management.
  • Department Operations

  • Support daily Produce Department operations to ensure efficient execution and product availability.
  • Aid with stocking, replenishment, rotation, trimming, culling, and display maintenance.
  • Ensure department sales areas, coolers, and storage areas remain clean and organized.
  • Maintain operational readiness throughout the day.
  • Serve as acting department leader in the absence of the Produce Manager.
  • Customer Service

    • Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-focused environment.
    • Assist customers with product selection, product information, and special requests.
    • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
    • Ensure department associates consistently provide friendly and knowledgeable service.
    • Support initiatives that increase customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Product Quality & Freshness

    • Ensure all produce meets company quality and freshness standards.
    • Monitor product rotation using First-In, First-Out (FIFO) practices.
    • Remove damaged, out-of-code, or unsaleable products.
    • Maintain attractive displays featuring high-quality products.
    • Ensure proper handling and storage of all produce items.
  • Mercandising & Sales

    • Assist in executing merchandising plans, seasonal promotions, and sales programs.
    • Maintain visually appealing, fully stocked, and properly signed displays.
    • Monitor product movement and sales trends to support ordering decisions.
    • Support sales-building initiatives and promotional events.
    • Identify opportunities to improve department sales and profitability.
  • Inventory Management & Shrink Control

    • Aid with ordering, receiving, inventory control, and product replenishment.
    • Monitor inventory levels to maintain strong in-stock conditions.
    • Support inventory counts and department audits.
    • Minimize shrink through proper rotation, handling, and inventory management practices.
    • Aid in investigating inventory discrepancies and implementing corrective actions.
  • Food Safety & Compliance

    • Ensure compliance with company food safety, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain proper storage temperatures and handling procedures.
    • Ensure department work areas, equipment, and displays are clean and sanitary.
    • Promote workplace safety and immediately address safety concerns.
    • Maintain compliance with all company operational standards and policies.
  • Operational Performance

    • Support achievement of department sales, labor, productivity, and profitability goals.
    • Monitor daily workflow and employee productivity.
    • Aid in implementing action plans to improve department performance.
    • Communicate operational opportunities and concerns to department leadership.
    • Support store-wide initiatives and business objectives.
