About the role

The Assistant Principal will use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student. The Assistant Principal will be responsible for the same competencies as a Principal and work under the direction of the Principal.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes the success of all students by maintaining a culture that supports student achievement, high quality instruction, and professional development to meet the diverse learning needs of the school community.
  • Engages the larger community in the knowledge of an advocacy for equity in meeting the diverse needs of the school community.
  • Organizes and coordinates ongoing professional learning opportunities that are aligned with the New Mexico Professional Development Framework and supports the diverse learning needs of the school community.
  • Manages the school campus, budget, and daily operations to equitably meet the diverse learning needs of the school community.
  • Develops, supports, encourages, and supervises programs that lead to increased student attendance, achievement, and graduation rates resulting in college readiness and work skills to meet the diverse needs of the community.
  • Administers the school in the Principal's absence.
  • Represents the Principal at various events or meetings as needed.
  • Supervises the coordination of the instruction program and classroom control.
  • Shares responsibility for supervision of school activities.
  • Supervises assigned staff.
  • Supervises all other resource and service personnel while functioning in your school.
  • Complies with timelines and requests for information from state and/or district administration.
  • Mets with committees (SAT, PAC, PLC’s, Goal Teams, Leadership Teams, etc.) in a consistent and timely manner as assigned by Principal.
  • Keeps artifacts of all meetings including attendance logs.
  • Promotes and supports district initiatives.
  • Supports EPSS with Principal and leadership team and submit with data as per district timeline.
  • Compiles data, or appoints individuals to compile data, and use to drive instructional decisions.

  • Be available to parents, students, administration, and peers outside the school day, if needed.
  • Be responsible for pupil behavior on the campus, handling cases up to and including recommendation for suspension or expulsion.
  • Administers the attendance accounting system as directed by the Principal.
  • Reports suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Be responsible for students on field trips.
  • Develop and use community and professional resources.
  • Understand and apply learning theories.
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and valid NM administrative license as required by the State of New Mexico.
  • The willingness to pursue such a license as necessary.
  • The willingness to be a principal at some point in time.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.
  • The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.

Equipment/Technology

  • Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.
  • Interruptions of work are routine.
  • Flexibility and patience are required.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.
