About the role

The Dynamics and Structure (DYS) group within the X-ray Science Division and the Surface Scattering and Microdiffraction (SSM) group are jointly seeking an Assistant Physicist to support the 8-ID and 28-ID beamlines. The successful candidate will advance diffraction-based techniques, particularly those leveraging the coherence properties of X-rays to investigate the structure and dynamics of condensed matter systems.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue a strong research program focused on coherent X-ray scattering and imaging.
  • Support user operations at both 8-ID and 28-ID beamlines.
  • Foster a vibrant user community through collaborations in key scientific areas.
  • Contribute to the development of new scientific opportunities using X-ray coherence.
  • Work closely with users to design and execute experiments.
  • Develop and analyze data using programming languages like Python.
  • Communicate research findings through publications, technical reports, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with other scientists and engineers to advance the field of coherent X-ray scattering.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics or a related field with expertise in coherent X-ray scattering or imaging.
  • Hands-on experience working at diffraction beamlines at synchrotron facilities.
  • Strong skills in data analysis and programming in Python.
  • Excellent communication skills for multidisciplinary team environments.
  • Ability to synthesize research findings into publishable work.
  • Self-motivated and interested in researching relevant topics.
  • Understanding and commitment to Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Knowledge of thin film growth and materials synthesis via various methods.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in coherent scattering techniques such as X-ray Photon Correlation spectroscopy or Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction.
  • Experience in thin film growth and materials synthesis via chemical vapor deposition, molecular beam epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, atomic layer deposition, or reactive sputtering.

Skills

  • Strong data analysis and programming skills in Python.

Pay

The expected hiring range for this position is $94,486.00 - $147,398.94. Please note that the pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
