Assistant or Associate Professor – Forest Hydrologist

This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 30% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatic Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.

Responsibilities

• Develop a collaborative, internationally recognized, and externally funded research program focused on understanding and predicting forest management influences on water quality and quantity across scales, including private and publicly owned forest lands in the southeastern US and beyond.
• Integrate field observations with hydrologic or ecosystem modeling of forest water resources, with an emphasis on pragmatic, solutions-oriented, and user-inspired research at the interface between water resources (e.g., streams, wetlands, aquifers, springs) and land management decision-making.
• Actively seek contract and grant funding to support the research program.
• Engage in Extension activities related to the program area.
• Teach two courses per year:
  • A required undergraduate course in forest hydrology/water resources (FNR4343 Forest Water Resources).
  • A graduate-level course in forest hydrology, hydric soils, wetland ecology, or similar, chosen in coordination with the graduate program committee.
• Engage in scholarly teaching activities, including:
  • Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Participating in curriculum revision and enhancement.
  • Seeking funding for the teaching program.
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work.
  • Publishing teaching-related scholarship and producing learning tools.
  • Engaging in professional development related to teaching and advising.
• Support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.
• Engage in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching, and Extension—regardless of the assignment split, in alignment with the IFAS land-grant mission.

Requirements

• A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in forest hydrology or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.
• Commitment to the mission of the Land-Grant system and UF core values.

Preferred Qualifications

• Postdoctoral experience.

Background Information

The School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences (SFFGS) has teaching, research, and Extension education programs in three broad areas: Geomatics; Forest Resources and Conservation; and Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. The SFFGS has 70 faculty members, 60 administrative and programmatic staff, 250 graduate students, and 350 undergraduate students. The School offers bachelor’s degrees in Geomatics, Forest Resources and Conservation, Natural Resource Conservation, and Marine Sciences; thesis and non-thesis master’s degrees in all focal areas, including distance education master’s programs; and Ph.D. degrees in all focal areas.
