About the role

The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. This multidisciplinary position aims to expand the university’s strengths in imaging, biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative engineering, and translational biomedical engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an independent research program focused on the design, fabrication, characterization, imaging, and biological evaluation of advanced biomaterials for tissue repair, regeneration, and disease modeling.
  • Create translational approaches for improved tissue repair, implanted material response, and regenerative medicine.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering, biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and related quantitative engineering topics.
  • Build collaborations with faculty across engineering, medicine, cancer biology, orthopedics, materials science, and translational research.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary institutes and externally funded team science.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a related field.
  • Home address in the state of Texas for the duration of the appointment.
  • Official transcripts required for faculty appointment.
  • Position is security sensitive; requires a criminal history check.
  • Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (communication infrastructure, cybersecurity, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment, water treatment) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research.
  • Submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching and mentoring statement, and contact information for three professional references.

Skills

  • Experience with imaging, 3D‑printed and advanced‑manufactured biomaterial platforms (extracellular matrix‑derived, decellularized, mineralized collagen, cryogel, polymer‑ceramic, composite scaffold systems).
  • Expertise in musculoskeletal tissue engineering; bone, cartilage, and osteochondral repair; osteoarthritis modeling and treatment; drug delivery; biomaterial strategies that modulate inflammation, macrophage polarization, mesenchymal stem cell behavior, osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and other cell‑material interactions.
  • Experience with high‑throughput scaffold or biomaterial screening platforms, in vitro co‑culture systems, quantitative materials characterization, microscopy‑based analysis (e.g., multiphoton microscopy), and relevant preclinical models.
  • Ability to connect imaging and biomaterials innovation with clinically relevant questions and develop translational approaches for improved tissue repair, implanted material response, and regenerative medicine.
  • Strong publication record, record of technical presentations, experience preparing competitive funding applications, and a clear plan for building an externally funded research program.
  • Strong teaching and mentoring experience; prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering, biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and related quantitative engineering topics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, commitment to student mentorship, and readiness to initiate new internal and external collaborations.
