Responsibilities
- Promote excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer-focused behavior with associates; smile, greet customers, answer questions, and resolve concerns promptly and professionally.
- Take customer orders over the phone or in person with a pleasant and positive attitude; determine customer needs for size and appearance and create finished decorated products in a timely manner.
- Ensure fresh, quality merchandise using proper product handling techniques; control damages and minimize product losses according to company procedures and standards.
- Cut and trim product as needed.
- Assist the Meat Manager in day-to-day functions, including merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement, and customer service; coordinate sales and merchandising plans to ensure proper stock levels and freshness.
- Perform duties of the Meat Manager in their absence.
- Monitor competitor activity concerning merchandising, pricing, quality, and comparison signage.
- Oversee department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports, product orders, and supplies to ensure successful period-end physical inventory.
- Assist with scheduling department associates, participate in training, reward and recognize performance, and delegate work assignments to maximize department profits.
- Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) for current and new associates.
- Manage inventory levels and review orders to meet customer demand; maintain backroom organization and product storage within company guidelines.
- Oversee shelf replenishment, prioritizing weekly specials, seasonal, locally relevant, and high-velocity items; utilize cutting lists for accuracy and variety.
- Check and verify department deliveries and invoices for accurate billing; help unload merchandise and transport it to the sales floor or storage area.
- Enforce department practices for receiving, dating, and restocking to ensure product rotation; monitor product quality and freshness.
- Control department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, managing labor costs, and reducing losses due to damages, spoiled product, and shrink.
- Ensure associates follow company recipes for prepared products; maintain freshness by removing and recording out-of-code products; complete required product logs.
- Keep meat department cases well-stocked and appealing; greet customers, make suggestions, answer questions about cuts and preparation, and resolve concerns promptly.
- Set up displays, rotate product, and ensure meat is fresh, saleable, and properly priced with correct signage; handle spoiled, damaged, or near-expiration products per company procedures.
- Grind and cut certain meats and poultry; weigh and wrap merchandise, applying stickers showing correct price and weight; maintain logs to track freshness and quality.
- Adhere to all food and personal safety codes when handling product or utilizing kitchen tools.
- Maintain backroom and receiving area security and organization by promoting 5S procedures; ensure general sanitation in the department following cleaning schedules and guidelines.
- Dispose of trash properly and empty bone cans; assist with baling cardboard or related duties if trained.
- Ensure smooth workflow within the department by cooperating with co-workers and superiors; continuously improve job performance.
- Utilize all company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including cut-resistant gloves, safety cutters, and company-sponsored footwear.
- Assist in other departments as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise associates within the department in partnership with or in the absence of the department manager.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED required; Associate or bachelor’s degree in a business-related or food service-related field desirable.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in management within a retail, restaurant, or supermarket environment; meat management experience preferred.
