Temporary position in the Athletics department at Skyview High School, reporting to the Head Coach.
About the role
Motivate and develop each athlete’s skills, attitudes, and habits to guide them toward success, personal growth, and good character. Provide examples of fair play, team building, and respect. Offer leadership and motivation to excel.
Responsibilities
- Attend all tryouts, practice meetings, and in-school events, and supervise students during related field trips and other out-of-school functions
- Assist with organizing practice schedules and game rosters
- Assist with assigning positions to players, and develop strategies and styles of play
- Attend out-of-school meetings, supervise fundraisers, and help students prepare for competitions
- Coach individual participants of varying abilities in the skills necessary for achievement in marching band
- Assist with tracking student performance throughout the season and develop stat sheets on players
- Assist with arranging transportation, scheduling, coordinating officials, or other competition-related logistics with the athletics and activities director
- Ensure the safety of students and maintain responsibility for the security of equipment and facilities; ensure safety equipment is used correctly
- Comply with federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy pertaining to medical procedures and student athletes, including the district’s concussion policy
- Ensure students are eligible to participate and have had necessary physical examinations
- Actively promote the athletic program, seek student participation, and select team members
- Model positive behavior, maintain a supportive environment, and remain professional under pressure
- Maintain high standards of conduct for student athletes, including respect and fair play
- Abide by the rules of the Idaho High School Activities Association Handbook
- Assist with collection of funds
- Work with coaches, parents, referees, news reporters, and operators of non-district facilities as appropriate
- Assist the head coach with attendance forms, insurance records, physical check-up forms, accident reporting, and other required paperwork
- Assist with training and assigning duties to team managers and direct event volunteers, if applicable
- Assist with annual program evaluation and make recommendations for improvements
- Assume responsibility for continuing professional growth through meetings, publications, and other efforts
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics of the Idaho Teaching Profession and the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Code of Ethics
- Seek assistance in emergencies
- Represent the school district positively and follow district policy and chain of command
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Idaho Teaching Certification, American Sport Education Program Certification, or National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association Certification strongly preferred
- Certification or willingness to obtain certification in first aid and CPR required
- Demonstrated knowledge of marching band, sports training, conditioning, injury prevention, kinesiology, management, and the rules of the Idaho High School Activities Association Handbook
- Related experience as determined by the Board
- Ability to foster and sustain students' interest in the activity and promote skill development
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to work well with students, parents, and colleagues
- Aptitude for working with adolescents
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of staff and students
Skills
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions
- Bilingual communication in English and Spanish preferred
- Sound judgment and problem-solving skills
- Flexibility to respond to changing situations and reprioritize work as needed
- Basic math skills and ability to manipulate formulas in spreadsheets
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), presentation software, and accounting/financial software
Physical demands
- Continuously required to walk, stand, and reach with hands and arms
- Occasionally required to sit, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities include close vision and depth perception
- Ability to communicate through speech
