About the Role

The Assistant Manager of Food Services (AMFS) is responsible for the daily management and oversight of GLIDE’s food services, including all activities associated with the planning and preparation of high-quality and nutritious food served in GLIDE’s Daily Free Meals Program. The AMFS partners with the Meals Program Manager to coordinate menu planning, procurement of food and kitchen supplies, and food-related logistics for daily meal service, annual holiday events, special events, and large GLIDE meetings. The role requires modeling and coaching GLIDE’s values, exemplary customer service, outstanding job performance, peaceful problem resolution, and respectful client management. Work responsibilities may require long days, evenings, weekends, or holidays. Excellent attendance and schedule flexibility are required based on program and operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and oversight of the planning, preparation, and presentation of all food and meals for GLIDE’s Daily Free Meals Program.
  • Direct cooks, prep cooks, volunteers, and GA/Community Service workers in the storage, preparation, and presentation of meals, bagged lunches, catered food, etc.
  • Maintain and review written inventory of all food, beverage, and meal program supplies to meet daily menu, nutritional, and service requirements.
  • Prepare orders for food, beverage, and meal program supplies in collaboration with the Meals Program Manager, following menu plans and stockroom inventory within annual budget guidelines.
  • Ensure all food, materials, and supplies are properly stored or refrigerated.
  • Monitor food handling practices for all staff, volunteers, and GA/Community Service workers engaged in food preparation, presentation, and service.
  • Maintain main kitchen and prep room equipment and storage in an orderly, clean condition throughout the day, ensuring the written cleaning and sanitation schedule is followed.
  • Coordinate menu, food preparation, and logistics for large meetings and event requests with the Meals Program Manager.
  • Communicate responsibilities and expectations to staff and volunteers through regular observation and feedback to ensure quality standards and service.
  • Monitor and report punctuality and performance of staff and volunteers.
  • Coach and model outstanding customer service, job performance, and compassionate problem resolution.

Requirements

  • AA Degree in Culinary and/or Food Service Management certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience working within a commercial or institutional kitchen setting.
  • Working knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Strong typing skills and ability to enter data with speed and accuracy.
  • Experience working in a community-based social service agency with oppressed, marginalized, and homeless populations.
  • Excellent food service, food prep, cooking, menu planning, and development abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize work and multitask within specific timelines.
  • Works well under pressure while maintaining quality, safety, and sanitation guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish tasks efficiently.
  • Willingness to lead, take charge, offer direction, and accept input from co-workers when necessary.
  • Ability to provide productive solutions to complex issues and persist in the face of obstacles.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess challenging situations and intercede to avoid conflict or incidents.
  • Dependability, reliability, and accountability in fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a cooperative attitude.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work on a computer and see details of objects at close range.
  • Ability to hear within normal range and communicate effectively (in person, by telephone, or via Zoom).
  • Finger dexterity and ability to use all standard office equipment.
  • Ability to sit or stand comfortably and navigate office spaces (via elevator or stairs).

Pay

$70,000 a year.

Schedule

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), exempt position. Work responsibilities may include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on program and operational needs.

Work Environment

GLIDE’s buildings are located in the Tenderloin neighborhood. GLIDE maintains an "open door" policy to the community and its clients, who frequently enter and leave the building.
