PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Assistant Manager of Engineering supports the planning, coordination, execution, and oversight of engineering, renovation, infrastructure, and capital construction projects across a healthcare system consisting of more than 30 locations. This role assists in managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, project schedules, budgets, quality standards, and operational requirements. Working closely with Facilities Leadership, Engineering Managers, Project Managers, clinical stakeholders, architects, contractors, and consultants, the Assistant Manager helps deliver projects that enhance patient care environments, improve facility reliability, and support organizational growth.
Responsibilities & Expectations
- Assist in managing engineering, renovation, infrastructure, and capital construction projects across multiple healthcare facilities.
- Cookordinate project activities from planning and design through construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
- Monitor project schedules, budgets, and milestones to ensure successful completion.
- Support the development of project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and procurement plans.
- Track project performance and prepare status reports for leadership.
- Assist with oversight of contractors, architects, engineers, consultants, and vendors.
- Conduct project site visits to monitor construction progress, safety, and quality standards.
- Cookordinate construction activities to minimize disruptions to patient care and hospital operations.
- Review project documentation, change orders, requests for information (RFIs), and contractor pay applications.
- Ensure construction activities comply with healthcare facility standards and organizational requirements.
- Serves as the project manager on renovation and new construction projects.
- Planns and facilitates project meetings.
- Prepares RFPs for design or construction projects.
- Selects and monitors consultants and contractors to take projects from inception to completion.
- Organizes bid packages, negotiates bids, awards contracts, resolves construction conflicts.
- Creates and maintains master plans to assist in the planning of capital projects.
- Assists with commissioning of projects and systems.
- Collects, prepares and/or assembles project closeout documents including archiving.
- Performs complex design reviews.
- Participates in Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA) and Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) planning.
- Aids in maintaining a safe environment during construction and renovation activities.
- Supports accreditation readiness and regulatory inspections.
- Aids in project budgeting, forecasting, and financial tracking.
- Reviews invoices, purchase orders, and project expenditures.
- Monitor project costs and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce expenses.
- Supports capital budget planning and reporting activities.
Job Requirements
- Possesses well rounded knowledge of construction.
- B.S. in mechanical, electrical, civil or construction engineering. Architectural degrees also accepted.
- CHC license or able to attain within 6 months of employment required.
- PE license preferred.
- 5 years experience in consulting engineering or construction management in a healthcare environment.
- Proven track record of managing construction projects to meet schedule and budget constraints.
- Experience generating construction budgets and cost estimates, organizing bid packages, and negotiating bids for general trades, mechanical, and electric work.
- Knowledge of architectural, structural, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of regulatory codes in a healthcare setting: TJC, FGI guidelines, NFPA, etc.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, AutoCAD, and construction scheduling software.
- Proficient oral and written communication skills.
Working Conditions
- 7:00am – 3:30pm M-F or hours as required by the job.
- Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day.
- Sitting/standing/lifting/moving about during working hours.
