About the role
The Assistant Store Manager is knowledgeable of all aspects of the store and assumes full responsibility of the store in the absence of the Store Manager. Duties and responsibilities are generally the same as those of the Store Manager. The Assistant Manager is essentially training to become a Store Manager and directly supervises associates in the store.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service by greeting and assisting customers, and responding to customer inquiries and complaints in a professional manner.
- Monitor sales activities to ensure customers receive satisfactory service and quality goods.
- Assign employees to specific duties and supervise employees engaged in sales, inventory-taking, reconciling cash receipts, or performing services for customers.
- Inventory stock and reorder when inventory drops to a specified level; keep records of purchases, sales, and requisitions.
- Enforce safety, health, and security rules.
- Examine products purchased for resale or received for storage to assess condition.
- Hire, train, and evaluate personnel; promote or fire workers when appropriate.
- Perform work activities of subordinates, such as cleaning and organizing shelves, displays, and selling merchandise.
- Establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures.
- Instruct staff on handling difficult and complicated sales.
- Formulate pricing policies for merchandise according to profitability requirements.
- Estimate consumer demand and determine types and amounts of goods to be sold.
- Examine merchandise to ensure correct pricing, display, and functionality as advertised.
- Plan and prepare work schedules; keep records of employees' work schedules and time cards.
- Review inventory and sales records to prepare reports for management and budget departments.
- Confer with company officials to develop methods and procedures to increase sales, expand markets, and promote business.
- Perform specific tasks as assigned by the store manager.
- Plan budgets and authorize payments and merchandise returns.
- Abide by all city, county, state, and federal regulations; stay familiar with all memos.
- Operate shift within company guidelines to achieve sales and profits.
- Assist store manager in measuring and evaluating employees, taking corrective action when necessary.
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, demoting, and terminating employees.
- Assist in assessing employees to build and maintain the business.
- Ensure employees know, understand, and follow company policies and procedures.
- Achieve productivity through example and leadership.

- Control store expenses and maintain company property.

- Record all hours worked, sales, markups, markdowns, spoilage, and store use of merchandise accurately.
- Organize, calculate, and enter daily sales information in the absence of the store manager.
- Close out payroll accurately to ensure employees are paid correctly and on time.
- Prepare end-of-week and end-of-year reports timely and accurately in the absence of the store manager.
- Advise store manager of personnel situations or policy violations affecting store operations.
- Maintain warning notices to reflect continuous performance records of employees.
- Train all new employees on each shift.
- Share responsibility for controlling store inventory.
- Notify store manager immediately if the bank deposit is not made daily.
- Maintain a low cash drawer and utilize the safe as instructed.
- Complete shift-checkout report at appropriate times.
- Enforce correct vendor check-in procedures within company guidelines.
- Keep safe locked at all times.
- Maintain coolers, shelves, and displays by keeping them full and fronted.
- Clean and maintain store equipment.
- Prepare and maintain perishable foods according to company standards.
- Order and maintain merchandise to prevent out-of-stocks.
- Build and maintain sellable displays.
- Clean the parking lot and grounds surrounding the store.
- Perform other tasks as assigned, including sweeping and mopping floors, dusting shelves, lifting and carrying trash, and unloading stock trucks.
Qualifications
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
- No prior experience necessary.
