About the Role

Supervises a group of maintenance and clerical employees responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with the public. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

TxDOT’s New Braunfels Maintenance Office is responsible for maintaining approximately 800 miles of the state's highway and roadway system throughout Comal County and portions of surrounding counties. As an Assistant Maintenance Supervisor, you will play a key role in leading maintenance operations that keep Texas roadways safe and reliable for the traveling public. Responsibilities include overseeing roadway and sign maintenance, debris removal, and heavy equipment operations, while supporting daily crew activities and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Assigns and oversees the work of section and contracted crews; ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
• Assists in budget preparation for the section.
• Assists with planning, coordinating, and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
• Handles public complaints.
• Inspects maintenance contract work.
• Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress, and work completed by the crews and contractors.
• Maintains records on materials, supplies, and personnel.
• May assist with survey-related activities.
• Oversees scheduling of equipment, material, and personnel necessary for section projects.
• Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
• Trains employees on the use of equipment and procedures.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or equivalent in general education.
• 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction-related work (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• 1 year of supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
• Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or a CDL "A” License at the time of application.
• Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond during emergency situations.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to random drug testing (safety impact position).
• Must pass a pre-employment physical as this job has been identified as physically demanding.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
• Required to wear protective gear—respirator, hard hat, or other device.
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Climbing—ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
• Balancing—walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
