Laboratory Assistant Graduate position providing support in specimen collection, processing, and customer service under the direction of laboratory leadership. Opportunity to transition to an open Laboratory Assistant role after one year of successful completion.
Responsibilities
- Collect laboratory specimens:
- Perform venipuncture on all age groups.
- Escort members for urine specimen collection and explain procedures.
- Follow department policies and Standard Precautions for specimen collection.
- Maintain professional demeanor and appearance during specimen collection.
- Research and collect appropriate specimens for requested tests.
- Address members with compassion and efficiency; ensure understanding of collection/storage instructions for take-home tests.
- Respond promptly to venipuncture requests outside the lab.
- Familiarize with emergency codes and execute appropriate procedures.
- Protect PHI per HIPAA; properly dispose of unused labels.
- Maintain clean, stocked, and sanitized work areas and phlebotomy rooms.
- Deliver great customer service:
- Show care and respect for members; resolve issues or escalate as needed.
- Build effective relationships with internal and external customers.
- Prioritize work to meet member needs, including updating members on delays or extended wait times.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills and professionalism.
- Greet members promptly with eye contact and a smile.
- Exhibit competency in Cerner (Laboratory Information System) and KP HealthConnect/EPIC.
- Maintain professional appearance and telephone etiquette.
- Avoid eating, drinking, chewing gum, cellphone use, or applying makeup in patient care areas.
- Process specimens:
- Process STAT, coagulation, and time-sensitive specimens immediately.
- Notify technologists of STAT specimens in the technical area.
- Follow through with add-on requests and department policies for specimen processing.
- Monitor pending functions daily to ensure all collected specimens are processed.
- Maintain clean and stocked accessioning work areas.
- Stay informed and provide information:
- Complete mandatory training, policy/procedure reviews, and competency requirements.
- Assist with facility lab preparation and internal DHR inspections.
- Attend department meetings and applicable in-service education programs.
- Read and comply with laboratory newsletters and Center pop-ups.
- Document quality issues and communicate them to supervisors.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
- Basic Life Support certification required at hire.
- Demonstrated good customer service skills, punctuality, and attendance history.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program.

- Shift: Day
- Workdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Working Hours: 08:00 AM – 08:00 PM
- Job Schedule: Call-in/On-Call
Pay
$22 - $27.68 / hour. Kaiser Permanente offers a market-competitive total rewards package, with pay determined based on labor market data, internal alignment, and candidate qualifications (e.g., experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location).
Travel
100% travel within the TP West Catchment service areas.
Work Setting
Onsite. Worker location must align with Kaiser Permanente's Authorized States policy.
