Assistant Infant/Toddler Teacher
Under the supervision of the Campus Director or Campus Supervisor, and in accordance with Head Start (HS) Federal Program Performance Standards, California Department of Education (CDE), California Department of Social Services (CDSS), Childcare Licensing Division (CLD), and MNC Inspiring Success (MNC), the Assistant Infant/Toddler Teacher will primarily assist the teachers in providing quality, comprehensive child development services to infant/toddler children and their families.
Responsibilities
- Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, facilitate intentional, child-led learning through small group activities, routines, classroom interactions, and transitions to meet individual and group needs.
- Assist children with personal care routines, including feeding, diapering, toileting, hand washing, tooth brushing, and safe sleep, while following written policies and procedures to model proper hygiene.
- Assist in organizing age-appropriate indoor, outdoor, quiet, active, and field trip activities, actively engaging children in the learning experiences.
- Support teachers with implementation of academic, behavior, family events, health, and nutrition plans for the purpose of achieving program objectives.
- Assist teachers in instructing children and parents to support child development and parenting skills, and help ESL learners acquire and expand English language skills and vocabulary.
- Prioritize children’s health and safety by maintaining required adult-child ratios and ensuring active supervision at all times.
- Work across classrooms, as assigned, to provide adequate coverage in the teacher’s absence, break periods, and planning time.
- Count children during and after transitions and throughout the day, communicating and documenting on the board.
- Monitor children’s conversations, manners, cleanup, listening, and other interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior.
- Observe children across all developmental domains and document observations according to policies and procedures within the required timelines.
- Use positive discipline techniques, including CSEFEL and co-regulation strategies, to guide children’s behavior and support them in managing strong emotions and behaviors.
- Maintain flexibility to adjust planned activities based on children’s interests.
- Track and complete daily forms, including infant/toddler information forms, infant safe sleep checklist, and other health and safety related documentation.
- Assist in measuring children’s height and weight twice a year, following policies and procedures within designated timelines.
- May assist with maintaining student files and records to ensure information is organized, accurate, and readily accessible.
- May assist in completing daily meal counts and attendance records for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in accordance with MNC policies and procedures.
- May conduct developmental assessments for up to three children.
- May assist with developing Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) for each child based on observations, screenings, parent input, and DRDP-2015 assessment results.
- May conduct parent-teacher conferences and home visit packets, as needed, following program policies and procedures.
- Assist the campus team in ensuring the provision of specialized services for children with identified special needs in the classroom.
- Build strong relationships with children and their families and encourage parent involvement in the program.
- Keep parents informed about daily classroom routines, expectations, policies, and volunteer opportunities.
- Communicate with parents about incidents observed and documented on-site regarding their child.
- Partner with families to integrate children’s home practices and traditions into classroom experiences that support each child’s identity and development.
- Assist volunteers, substitutes, and parents in working with children in the classroom, ensuring proper health practices, food handling, and appropriate interactions and supervision.
- Maintain and clean classroom spaces, equipment, refrigerators, work areas, and playgrounds to ensure availability of items and to provide a safe, sanitary environment.
- Keep classroom areas and materials organized and labeled, rotating a variety of materials on low shelves for children to use independently.
- Set up and serve meals and snacks to meet children’s nutritional needs and check and sign for food and food service supplies upon delivery.
- Check and log food temperatures and follow procedures for heating and storing food according to MNC’s policies and procedures.
- Carry out Health & Safety Checklists, identify and correct deficiencies, perform minor classroom repairs as needed, and report major repairs to the Campus Director or Supervisor.
- Understand and follow emergency and safety procedures.
- Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and assist in maintaining emergency equipment and supplies.
- Follow Head Start/Early Head Start/CDE/CLD policies and procedures in reporting suspected child abuse in accordance with federal and state laws.
- Participate in professional development trainings, in-service sessions, and other opportunities.
- Partner with education coaches to engage in practice-based coaching cycles to improve teaching practices rooted in CLASS, CSEFEL, DRDP, and the Program for Infant Toddler Care (PITC) framework.
- Complete DRDP 2025 training and receive rater certification within 30 days of start date and enroll in additional DRDP Instrument and Meaningful Observation training if necessary.
- Enroll in annual CA Social-Emotional Foundations in Early Learning (CSEFEL) training when available.
- Participate in PITC Curriculum Framework training within 1 year of start date.
- Follow timekeeping policies and procedures and approve your timesheet following the payroll schedule.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support classroom, campus, and program needs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Development or a related field, or enrollment in an Associate’s Degree program, is highly preferred.
- Minimum of 3 units in Infant Care is also required.
- At least 6 months of professional experience working with Infants or Toddlers.
- 16-hour certification in training and experience in the principles of child health, safety, and nutrition.
- State of California Child Development Assistant Teacher Level Permit.
- Fingerprinting Clearance (DOJ & FBI).
- Clearance of Child Abuse Index (CACI).
- Current Physical Health Screening (every 2 years thereafter).
- Current Immunizations (Influenza, MMR, Pertussis) (every 2 years thereafter).
- Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance.
- Current CPR & First Aid Certificate (every 2 years thereafter).
- Registered with the Early Care & Education Workforce Registry.
- Must attend trainings that are required by funders (might be an evening or Saturday).

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit approximately 40% of the time, walk 20% of the time, and stand 40% of the time. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to type or handle, feel, and operate objects. The employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to speak and listen. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
