About the role
An Industrial Electrician's Assistant supports and assists journeyman electricians in installing, maintaining, and repairing high-voltage electrical equipment and control systems within CalPortland facilities. The role functions as an apprentice, performing lower-skill tasks while learning the industrial electrical trade, with a focus on machinery, automation infrastructure, and safety protocols in a heavily regulated industrial environment.
Responsibilities
- Install lighting, electrical outlets, and circuit breakers under supervision
- Thread conduit ends and connect couplings and conduit fittings using wrench under supervision
- Pull wires through conduit leading to connection boxes, switch panels, and other terminals under supervision
- Use tools such as conduit benders, screwdrivers, pliers, knives, hacksaws, wire strippers, power tools, and metering devices
- Replace faulty circuit breakers, fuses, switches, electrical and electronic components, or wire under supervision, as necessary
- Maintain and troubleshoot electrical equipment and power distribution throughout CalPortland’s facilities
- Assist in establishing procedures to locate and correct electrical problems and determine component replacements
- Assist with and/or perform high and low voltage splices, terminations and stress cones
- Assist with installing and maintaining high, medium and low voltage power controls on various equipment
- Perform necessary maintenance to equipment and machinery to repair or replace defective parts under supervision
- Troubleshoot electrical problems in power circuits 120 - 12,470 volts and in control circuits of various voltages; repair transformers and circuit breakers under supervision
- Perform a variety of electrical tests to determine exact cause of issues
- Perform adjustments and calibration procedures on various forms of process equipment under supervision, as necessary
- Perform preventative maintenance as instructed on all equipment/machinery under supervision, as necessary
- Collaborate with other departments to provide electrical support and ensure day-to-day maintenance issues are resolved; maintain an electronic log of shift highlights
- Perform work area inspections and maintain clean work space
Education
- High school diploma or GED
- Electrical Certification/Diploma (preferred)
Requirements/Qualifications
- Basic understanding of hand and power tools (including wire strippers, drills, conduit benders)
- Ability to learn or basic familiarity with reading simple electrical diagrams or schematics
- Capability to climb ladders, work at heights, lift heavy loads (frequent 75 lbs., occasional 100 lbs.), and maneuver in tight, loud environments
- Ability to perform motions including climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, stretching, pushing, pulling, vibration, twisting, kneeling, standing, walking, sitting, and reaching
- Ability to work in wet and/or dry conditions with extreme hot or cold temperatures
- Strict adherence to OSHA / MSHA safety rules and CalPortland’s Injury and Illness Plan
- Work environment includes moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and moderate to loud noises, requiring consistent use of appropriate PPE
- Capability to learn trade with NEC and NFC minimum standards
- Current and valid AZ License with good driving record
- Ability to work overtime, night, and weekend work as needed, including responding to emergency calls
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Ability to travel to other locations to provide support, when necessary
- Ability to read and comprehend electrical blueprints and schematics
- Provide basic tools for routine maintenance, installation and repair work (preferred)
