Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Sarasota National Club, located in Venice, FL, is undergoing a complete course re-design and reconstruction project. This Fry-Straka design features bold changes, including earth-scaping each hole, next-gen zoysia grass varieties for enhanced playability, and expanded centipede grass native areas as part of its Audubon Signature Sanctuary environmental stewardship mission.

About the role

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent oversees the maintenance and construction of the golf course, ensuring turf grass is repaired and maintained to established standards. This is a tremendous opportunity to gain exposure to large-scale construction with modern golf course architecture and a contemporary grassing schema.

Responsibilities

• Works with the Superintendent to ensure the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans are maintained and followed.
• Supervises and assists maintenance staff in daily duties.
• Assists in the planning, organizing, and direction of the maintenance and construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
• Supervises the planting and cultural practices involved in growing various turf grasses, trees, and ornamental plants.
• Ensures construction equipment is properly maintained.
• Assists in the procurement of supplies and materials, ensuring costs remain within budgetary limitations.
• Keeps records of annual maintenance activities and costs; assists with the preparation of required reports.
• Follows sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors.
• Reconciles and provides timely coding of all invoices, payroll, and other required documents.
• Ensures all company policies and procedures are followed, including compliance with government regulations.
• Ensures associates obtain proper licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations.
• Addresses directly all real or perceived environmental concerns.
• Manages department members, which may include: Mechanic, Environmental Technician, Equipment Operator, Foreman, Greenskeeper, and Irrigation Technician.
• Assures effective orientation and training for each new associate; develops ongoing job training programs.
• Conducts periodic safety trainings and keeps appropriate records of topics and attendance.
• Monitors business volume forecast and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, costs, and other expenses.
• Regular and reliable attendance; incorporates safe work practices in job performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree (AA), or equivalent from a four-year or two-year college or technical school.
• Three to four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Degree preference in agronomy, horticulture, plant science, or soil science.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Pesticide Application License.

Skills

• Ability to read and speak English (required).
• Ability to read and speak Spanish (highly desirable).
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

• Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, fumes, and/or airborne particles.
• Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.
• Moderate noise level.

Pay

$70,000 - $85,000 annually, based on experience.
