Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Sarasota National, located in Venice, FL, is a Troon-managed property currently undergoing a complete course redesign and reconstruction by Fry-Straka, featuring next-gen zoysiagrass and expanded centipedegrass native areas as part of its Audubon Signature Sanctuary environmental stewardship mission.

About the role

The Assistant Superintendent oversees the maintenance and construction of the golf course, ensuring turfgrass is repaired and maintained to established standards while working within budgetary and regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Works with the Superintendent to maintain and follow the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans.
• Supervises and assists maintenance staff in daily duties.
• Assists in planning, organizing, and directing the maintenance and construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
• Supervises planting and cultural practices for turf grasses, trees, and ornamental plants.
• Ensures construction equipment is properly maintained.
• Assists in procurement of supplies and materials, ensuring costs remain within budget.
• Keeps records of annual maintenance activities, costs, and prepares required reports.
• Follows sound purchasing procedures using preferred vendors.
• Reconciles and codes invoices, payroll, and other documents in a timely manner.
• Ensures compliance with all company policies and government regulations.
• Ensures associates obtain proper licenses for job tasks and addresses environmental concerns.
• Manages department members including Mechanic, Environmental Technician, Equipment Operator, Foreman, Greenskeeper, and Irrigation Technician.
• Provides effective orientation, training, and ongoing job training programs.
• Conducts periodic safety trainings and maintains records of topics and attendance.
• Monitors business volume forecasts and plans for manpower, productivity, costs, and expenses.
• Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree (AA), or equivalent from a four-year or two-year college or technical school; three to four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Degree preference in agronomy, horticulture, plant, or soil science).
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Pesticide Application License.
• Ability to read and speak English is required.
• Ability to read and speak Spanish is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

• Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, fumes, and/or airborne particles.
• Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.
• Moderate noise level.

Pay

$70,000 - $85,000 annually, based on experience.
