Assistant General Manager - 5 years Railroad experience required with Supervisory duties
Job Summary
As an Assistant General Manager, you’ll play a key leadership role in overseeing all aspects of railroad operations including driving efficiency, strengthening customer relationships, and supporting the overall success of the business. You’ll partner closely with leadership to ensure operations stay on track financially and strategically while building strong teams and community connections. Responsibilities
Support the General Manager in managing the safety performance, operating practices, and financial productivity of the operation
Assumes a leadership role in supervising crews, schedules, personnel, and maintains payroll within the targeted budget
Partner with the General Manager and Human Resources on hiring and employee relations according to policies when necessary
Coach and train both managers and employees in operating practices according to federal regulations and company policies
Submit annual business plan and analyze daily/monthly performance of the railroads to determine changes in operations required to stay on plan
Establish and maintain the railroad’s credibility with its customers
Establish the railroad within the community it serves, especially relations with connecting carriers; local suppliers; local, state, and federal politicians and governmental agencies; and the business community
Represent the railroad within industry trade associations
Respond to and investigate accidents / incidents (derailments, personal injury, etc.), prepare associated reports and provide proper notification
Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
Full-time (40 plus hours weekly)
Varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment that includes nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call
Outdoor work in all weather conditions
Walking long distances on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders and equipment always ensuring three points of contact in varying environmental conditions
Able to lift up to 75 pounds from floor to waist and carry short distances
Able to squat, bend and lift overhead
Have good balance and coordination
Must meet vision requirements (including color)
Skills And Experience
Ability to communicate effectively by letter, telephone, and personal interview with senior management, employees, customers, railroads, regulatory officials and the general public
Thorough knowledge of railroad operations, including, but not limited to, transportation, dispatching, marketing, maintenance-of-way, mechanical, and clerical activities
Management and leadership skills commensurate with the size of staff and property
Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, the Code of Federal Regulations, and monthly financial reports
Proficient computer skills and skills in Microsoft Office
Prior sales and marketing experience preferred
5+ years of work experience in the railroad industry, with supervisory duties; 7+ years of experience in the railroad industry preferred
Required Education And Credentials
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred; two years of related experience may be substituted for each year of college
Certified Locomotive Engineer certification preferred
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical review
May be subject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screening
Background screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving history

Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate. Relocation assistance may be offered for this position.
