About the Role

We are currently seeking a talented Assistant General Counsel (Litigation Counsel) at our USAA corporate headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. As a dedicated Assistant General Counsel, you will provide legal counsel to business unit leadership by identifying and analyzing legal issues and communicating effective legal advice. You will proactively engage with business clients to understand USAA's strategic and operational objectives, collaborate with internal stakeholders, and work independently on significant organizational matters.

This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL. Relocation assistance is available. The role offers a flexible work environment requiring in-office presence 4 days per week.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal counsel to support business objectives and mitigate regulatory, compliance, and litigation risk to USAA.
• Leads complex legal assignments with high business impact and delivers appropriate solutions.
• Effectively communicates with stakeholders and varying levels of leadership in both verbal and written forms, producing clear and concise legal positions.
• Proactively monitors and analyzes changes in laws, regulations, and industry, advising leadership of such changes in a timely manner.
• Collaborates across USAA and the Legal and Advisory Services to mitigate risk.
• Works effectively with outside counsel or contract professionals to complete assignments.
• May assist more senior attorneys in providing advice and counsel on highly complex matters.
• Ensures escalation of matters presenting significant risk to more senior attorneys.
• Serves as a resource to less experienced team members.
• Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
• Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or a territory of the USA.
• 6 years of relevant experience with at least 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Ability to communicate legal advice effectively to business partners.

Qualifications

• Four plus years of experience handling complex auto injury and/or property litigation docket, including bad faith litigation and trial experience.
• In-house management experience involving the products or business operations of personal lines insurance companies (auto, property, life) and class actions.
• Experience analyzing insurance claims handling practices and claim files for personal lines insurance products.
• Excellent proficiency with rules of civil procedure and evidence, e-discovery processes, and institutional document production and retention issues.
• US military experience through military service or as a military spouse/domestic partner.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $143,320 - $273,930. USAA does not provide visa sponsorship for this role.
