Assistant General Counsel, Coverage Litigation
About the role
AIG’s Global Legal, Compliance, Regulatory and Government Affairs (GLCR) department is comprised of attorneys and other professionals who provide high-quality advisory and transactional support with integrity and objectivity across all parts of the organization. The team ensures an operating environment that minimizes legal, regulatory, and reputational risk, complies with applicable laws and regulations, and enforces AIG policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Manage a litigation docket consisting of insurance coverage matters involving property and specialty lines policies issued to commercial insureds in the United States and abroad;
- Oversee and partner with outside counsel to ensure high-quality written advocacy and consistent litigation positions on behalf of AIG member insurance companies;
- Exercise sound legal judgment in making strategic litigation decisions with a focus on consistency, risk, and broader business impact;
- Develop and execute case-specific resolution strategies and provide well-reasoned recommendations;
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding the initiation of coverage litigation on behalf of AIG member insurance companies;
- Serve as a strategic legal advisor to business and Claims partners, including by providing coverage advice in advance of litigation;
- Travel domestically or internationally, as needed, for mediations, trials, and oral arguments;
- Report to an Associate General Counsel who maintains close oversight of matters handled by the team.
Requirements
Attorney with at least five years of major law firm experience strongly preferred; J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials; Admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; Litigation and insurance coverage experience required; and Prior in-house experience is useful but not required.

Pay
The base salary range for positions based in New Jersey is $142,000-178,000 and for positions based in New York is $144,000-180,000. In addition, the position is eligible for a bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable incentive plan.
